On The Morning Show on Wednesday, local attorney Millicent Daniels joined me to talk about drag racing and street takeovers, which she says are a major concern in Florida.
“We’re seeing this happen, really in every major city in the state, because the issue is it poses so much of a danger to not only drivers and fellow motorists, but also pedestrians,” Daniels said. “And then I think also the concern of the Legislature is that many times it obstructs public roadways. So there are some very, very serious considerations here in Florida when it comes to street racing.”
Daniels said the concerns come not just from the dangerous drivers but also because they block off intersections, highways and public roadways.
She said a study from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles found that the biggest offenders for street racing and street stunting are drivers aged 16 to 22.
“That’s super concerning because those are young people. And you know, these types of criminal activities can have lasting consequences. A moment of fun can yield a lifetime of problems,” Daniels said.
Daniels broke down the penalties for those who participate in street racing, including passengers, who can also be subject to penalties.
“If you are driving or a passenger in that vehicle that’s racing or even stunting --that means doing donuts, wheelies, drifters, things of that nature, burnouts -- you are subject to a misdemeanor offense if it’s your first time,” Daniels said. Now, that means that you could be put on probation, you could face jail time, and the Legislature has increased the fine up to $2,000 for a first-time offender."
But one of the biggest punishments, Daniels said, is that your driver’s license is revoked for a year.
Spectators and organizers can also face penalties, Daniels said, including fines.
And if you’re caught more than once, each time, the penalties get stronger, Daniels said.
