Police detonate mortar shell found in park

Person walking through park spotted military ordnance

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A piece of military ordnance found at a park Wednesday afternoon in the Bayard area of Jacksonville was detonated by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office bomb squad.

The suspicious device was reported on Genovar Street at Genovar Park, just off I-295. It was found by someone walking through the park, police said.

The device appeared to be a 60mm mortar shell. The bomb squad put a counter-charge on it and detonated it.

No one was injured.

Police are investigating how the mortar shell ended up at the park.
