JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Westside man was arrested Monday after he admitted to shooting and killing his neighbor's dog, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Robert Ponting, 76, is charged with cruelty to animals.

Officers said they were called Monday to Ponting's home on Oxbow Road when he made a complaint about his neighbor's dogs running loose.

Ponting told police that he had shot one of the dogs when it came to his back door last month then buried it in his backyard, according to his arrest report.

Police checked their records, and saw a warrant was issued for Ponting's arrest in connection with that shooting.

He was booked into the Duval County Jail, but posted his $25,000 bond Tuesday.
