Flames consume fertilizer truck near Avondale

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A truck transporting fertilizer and insecticides caught fire Thursday afternoon near the Avondale area, Jacksonville Fire Rescue said.

It happened about 3 p.m. at the intersection of San Juan Avenue and Herschel Street.

About 30 people, including firefighters and a hazmat team, were needed to extinguish the flames.

The hazmat team then took care of leaks and cleaned up the mess. Fire Rescue said no contaminants got into the sewer system.

The driver was able to get out of the truck, but the Wells Fargo bank at the intersection closed early because the fumes were so strong.

No injuries were reported.

It's unclear at this time what caused the fire.
