Arrest made in accidental shooting in Arlington

Firearm accidentally discharged as victim tried to calm down suspect

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An Arlington man was arrested Tuesday night in an accidental shooting, Jacksonville police said.

Garrett Stone, 24, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after the shooting on Layton Road.

The 28-year-old victim told officers Stone had a recent death in the family that was weighing heavily on him, according to the arrest report. The victim went to Stone's home to check on him, and saw him armed with a long gun that had a scope. 

Investigators said the victim tried to calm Stone down when the gun discharged inside of the residence.

The victim was shot in the leg, and taken to Memorial Hospital.

Stone allowed officers to search his home. Inside, police said they found three firearms on the floor of the hallway. 

Stone was being held in Duval County Jail on $185,000 bond.
