Officers went to the apartment complex, which lies outside their jurisdiction, to assist Putnam County Sheriff's deputies, but arrived first, police said.

There, officers encountered and shot Tyrell Pinkston, 27, of Palatka, who police said was involved in the disturbance. Pinkston was taken to a hospital but did not survive.

Police recovered a gun from the scene.

The officers, whose names were not immediately released, were placed on administrative leave, which is routine for police-involved shootings. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.
