Lawmakers seek to end questions about fantasy sports

Two Republican lawmakers have filed proposals aimed at making clear that fantasy sports contests are not subject to Florida gambling laws.

Rep. Jason Brodeur, R-Sanford, filed a proposal (HB 223) on Tuesday, four days after Sen. Dana Young, R-Tampa, filed a similar bill (SB 374).

The measures will be considered during the 2018 legislative session, which starts in January.

Daily online fantasy sports contests have faced questions in several states in recent years about whether they are a form of gambling.

While Brodeur and Young would make clear the games are not considered gambling in Florida, they differ on at least one issue.

Young's bill would seek to prohibit fantasy contests based on the performances of athletes in college, high-school and youth sports.
