Police: Wanted man shoots himself after Waycross pursuit

Officers had been chasing man on foot, firing bean bag rounds

WAYCROSS, Ga. – A police chase Tuesday morning in Waycross, Georgia, ended abruptly when a wanted man fatally shot himself, authorities said.

Acting on a tip, officers went to a location where the man was staying, according to the Waycross Police Department. After a brief foot chase, police cornered the man near Gilmore and Reed streets.

Officers tried to take the man down using bean bag rounds, according to police. But once he was surrounded, police said, the man shot himself.

The man, identified as 27-year-old Mackenzie Rustin, was rushed to the hospital, where he died, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah.

No officers were hurt during the pursuit or shooting.
