FHP: 2-car crash on I-95 at Eighth Street leaves driver dead

Troopers say speed was factor in crash that closed Eighth Street for hours

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 31-year-old man died Saturday after two cars crashed on Interstate 95 at Eighth Street and one of them went off the highway, down the embankment and struck two trees.

The Florida Highway Patrol said both cars were heading south on I-95 just before 2 p.m. when a Ford Focus driven by Sean Owens moved across two travel lanes and tried to enter the far right lane that was occupied by a Chevrolet Cruze. Owens' car spun off the side of the highway and slid down near the Eighth Street exit before coming to s stop after hitting trees.

Owens died at the scene. No one in the Cruze was hurt, according to the FHP report.

Troopers said Owens was speeding, possibly going about 75 mph, when the crash happened.

All lanes of Eighth Street under the interstate were closed for hours while the accident was investigated and cleared.
