Amazon Prime settlement: How to claim your refund from $2.5 billion FTC deal

Amazon began sending claim notices to eligible Prime customers in January 2026 following a historic $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission. If you haven’t received an automatic refund, you may still be able to file a claim.

What the lawsuit was about

The FTC alleged Amazon enrolled tens of millions of customers in Prime subscriptions without their knowledge or consent and made it intentionally difficult to cancel those subscriptions.

Under the settlement, Amazon is required to pay $1.5 billion in refunds to affected customers, pay a $1 billion civil penalty and cease its unlawful enrollment and cancellation practices.

Who is eligible

You may be eligible for a refund if you meet all three of the following requirements:

  • You are an Amazon Prime customer in the United States.
  • You signed up for Amazon Prime through a “challenged enrollment flow” — which includes the universal Prime decision page, shipping selection page, single page checkout or the Prime Video enrollment flow — or you tried to cancel through the online cancellation flow but were unable to do so between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025.
  • You used no more than three Amazon Prime benefits — including Prime Music or Prime Video — in any 12-month period following enrollment.

Customers do not need to determine on their own whether they signed up through a challenged enrollment flow. Amazon will complete that analysis.

How much you could receive

Eligible Prime customers may receive a refund of their Amazon Prime subscription fees, up to a maximum of $51.

How refunds are being issued

Amazon issued refunds in two stages. Automatic refunds were sent to eligible customers in November and December 2025. Beginning in January 2026, Amazon started sending claim notices — by mail or email — to eligible customers who did not receive an automatic refund.

Payments for the claims process are expected in late 2026, though Amazon has not yet announced a specific mailing date.

How to collect your payment

Customers who receive a claim notice can choose to receive their payment by check, PayPal or Venmo by following the instructions on their claim form.

Customers who did not previously receive an automatic payment have until July 27 to submit a claim.
