JSO: Detective swiped $100 bill during drug raid

Detective Jason Mann charged with petty theft, tampering with evidence

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville Sheriff's Office detective was arrested Thursday evening after police said he swiped a $100 bill during a drug raid.

Undersheriff Pat Ivey said Detective Jason Mann, an 11-year veteran of JSO, is charged with petty theft and tampering with evidence, which is a third-degree felony.

Mann, 45, has resigned his position with JSO, Ivey said.

Ivey said that Mann, a narcotics detective, was on a team that served a warrant about 5 p.m. Thursday at a home on Dignan Street in the Lackawanna neighborhood.

Detectives found drugs and cash at the home and inventoried the evidence, but the sergeant and some of the detectives later noticed the lone $100 bill that was among the cash was missing, Ivey said.

Ivey said the sergeant gathered all the detectives at the scene in a room and asked them to turn out their pockets. He said two of the detectives, including Mann, had a $100 bill on them.

Detectives had already photographed the serial numbers on the cash found at the home and were able to match the bill Mann had to one of the photos, Ivey said.

Mann was interviewed and asked if he had ever done anything similar before, but Ivey said police have not found any evidence of that.

Ivey said Mann confessed during that interview to taking the cash on Thursday but did not give a reason why he took it.

It's unclear how many cases Mann has pending that might be tainted by his arrest.

His personnel documents show one written reprimand for failure to perform his duty. Â
