CHARLTON COUNTY, Ga. – Days after saying construction at the new Charlton County High School was on track for the planned start of school on Monday, the district announced Wednesday that the building will not be ready in time.
That means the start of school for high schoolers in the county is now delayed “until further notice.”

Students at all other schools will return to class on Monday as planned.
The district said Charlton County High School should be able to start next week, but possibly not until Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
The open house for the new school has also been postponed.
“Delaying the start will allow teachers ample time to set up their classrooms next week and to ensure everything is working as it should (computer networks, cafeteria equipment, etc.)” the district wrote on social media.
The district said it will alert students and families about the new start date, “as soon as we get teachers in the building and have a firm timeline on the completion of the remaining electrical work.”
The two elementary schools and the middle school in the county will hold their open houses on Thursday and will begin on Monday.
The post on the Charlton County School System page came just days after the district said, “The new school is coming along nicely and the construction company assures us we are on track for our Monday opening.”
In that earlier post on Monday, the district also said the furniture company is assembling and installing furniture in all classrooms, cafeteria, and offices; final touches are being made to the auditorium and the cafeteria eating area; and the ground is prepped for asphalt.
The district said the school building is only Phase 1 of construction.
“The new gym, weightroom, and hallway connecting them to the existing gym and new building are still under construction and will not be complete until sometime in 2027,” the district wrote.
