Undefeated Mandarin against reigning state champion Raines.
It was a matchup on Friday with a quality and atmosphere that was among the best in Florida. And Mandarin came out swinging.
On the Mustangs’ opening drive, quarterback Knox Annis found Brysen Wright in the endzone to put the Mustangs up 7-0 — an early statement.
But the night flipped fast.
After a well-placed Raines punt pinned Mandarin deep, the Vikings began winning the field-position battle, and the mistakes that can hide in a winning streak started showing up on the scoreboard.
“Miscommunications, penalties, lining up wrong. Just little mistakes that just — it starts to pile up,” Mandarin quarterback Knox Annis said.
Raines took control with a physical run game and a couple of momentum plays — including a third-down deflection off the back of a Mandarin defender that miraculously ended up in the hands of the Vikings and into a touchdown — on the way to a 31–13 win.
So when a team gets set back how does it respond?
Head coach Toby Bullock pointed to how thin the margin can be against elite teams — and why Monday matters more than Friday now.
“I’m expecting our energy to be high,” linebacker Kaden Bryant said. “After that loss, we just move forward.”
Now Mandarin turns the page to a district matchup against Fletcher and a homecoming atmosphere back on their side — a chance to show what they learned, and what kind of team they are when the season doesn’t go perfectly.
“We come back on Monday,” Annis said. “It’s a new day. It’s a new week.”
