Police: 1-year-old girl shot in 1 of 2 Jacksonville shootings

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office were sent to investigate two separate shootings reported Tuesday in different parts of Jacksonville, one of which involved a 1-year-old girl.

The Sheriff’s Office said police were called to Meharry Avenue at about 7:53 p.m. They found the young girl, who was in a vehicle with two adult women, had been wounded after shots were fired at their car as they traveled down Brooklyn Road. The two women were not wounded.

According to JSO, the child was shot in her leg and she was hospitalized for treatment. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

An officer said two houses, as well as a parked car, were also struck by gunfire. No additional injuries were reported.

Police did not have a description of the shooter. No arrests were immediately announced.

In an unrelated incident, officers responded to a wellness check at about 10:15 a.m. on Red Robin Drive East. According to JSO, a man was found dead in a home from an apparent gunshot wound. His death was being investigated as a murder.

Police said the medical examiner will perform an autopsy on Wednesday. The man was not identified.
