JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Cold weather can make joints more painful and stiff.

When cold weather strikes, some blood flow is rerouted from our limbs to important organs such as our heart and lungs. This takes warmth away from our joints, which can cause discomfort. Low temperatures can also make the fluid inside joints thicker, so they feel stiffer.

There are some tips that can help people with arthritis deal with our chilly months until milder weather arrives in April.

One way to make cold weather more tolerable is to dress warmly. Yes, it seems like common sense but some Floridians lack the proper heavy clothing for the more than a half-dozen freezing mornings we’ve had in Jacksonville this year.

It can be hard to break from the nearly year-round flip-flop use but think twice before going outdoors in the way we are accustomed.

Quick trips barefoot to check the mail or a dash to the car for a run to the store can send a jolt of cold to the body. Be sure to wear proper outerwear.

Sure it is an expensive investment for clothing that will only be used a few times each year which is why layers can take the place of that fancy featherdown jacket or technical coat.

Remember to always wear a hat, scarf, and gloves or mittens when going outdoors.

You would be surprised how much an electric blanket or heating pad can help overnight. Place the heating elements over the aching joints while you rest.

Not only will your bones thank you but the relaxing warmth may also help you get more restful sleep.
