Armed robbery suspect dies after Baymeadows police chase, JSO says

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One of three men suspected in a reported armed robbery in the Baymeadows neighborhood was found dead in a car following a police chase, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

JSO said officers were investigating a reported armed robbery around 4 p.m. on Friday when they saw a car that matched the description of the car involved near Baymeadows Road and Interstate 95.

The driver of the car took off when police got behind him, JSO said, and ended up on Baymeadows Way. It was there that police spun the car out using a PIT maneuver.

As officers approached the car, two of the three suspects tried to run but were immediately caught, JSO said.

The third suspect, the driver of the car, was found unresponsive inside the car and later pronounced dead.

“It appears at this time that the suspect at some point may have sustained a gunshot wound prior to police approaching the vehicle. This will be determined, obviously, with the medical examiner’s findings, and the other two suspects will obviously be interviewed to ascertain what may have happened to the suspect,” said JSO spokesman Christian Hancock.

Hancock said at no time did any officer fire his or her service weapon.

JSO will release more information, including the cause of death, at a later time.

Anyone who has any information about the reported robbery or the suspects is asked to contact JSO by calling 904-630-0500 or emailing JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org. To remain anonymous and receive a possible reward of up to $3,000, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS (8477).
