St. Johns County – The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office released photos Saturday of a sinkhole that opened up on North Loop Parkway in the gated Palencia subdivision.

Deputies said it happened after a vehicle hit a fire hydrant in the neighborhood, causing the area to flood.

Water has been turned off for an undetermined amount of time. People are being advised to avoid the area.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, repairs are underway and crews hope to stabilize the area in a couple of hours.

The county would handle any mitigation efforts, but they do not have concerns for water quality because of the shutoff at this time, a Sheriff’ Office spokesperson said.

No one was injured in crash, and charges are pending an investigation, the spokesperson said.
