Woman walking down Bowden Road struck, killed by Jeep

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman was struck and killed Thursday evening by a Jeep that witnesses told police was being driven in a “haphazard manner,” according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Lt. Rich Bouye, with the Sheriff’s Office, said police were first sent to the scene near the intersection of Bowden and Eman Road at about 7:30 p.m. He said the Jeep was traveling east, and the woman -- a pedestrian -- was walking eastbound on a sidewalk.

Bouye said the Jeep crossed a westbound lane, jumped a curb and struck the woman from behind. She died at the scene.

“As of right now, alcohol and or drugs, is suspected,” Bouye said of the driver, who remained at the scene with witnesses.

“The young lady was just walking down the road, walking down the sidewalk minding her own business,” he continued. “And she’s never gonna make it home again.”

Bouye said the incident marks the 140th traffic fatality in Duval County in 2021.

An arrest was not immediately announced.
