FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – A homicide investigation is underway in Fernandina Beach, authorities said Monday.
The Fernandina Beach Police Department and Florida Department of Law Enforcement were called to investigate on South 13th Street near Date Street.
South 13th Street was closed to through traffic in the area but has since reopened.
Neighbors told News4Jax that they heard sirens on Sunday and saw police cruisers fill the street, and they were still there when they woke up Monday morning. The neighbors said investigators were going in and out of a house.
“Seen the lights and there was everything — fire trucks, rescues, police,” said John Dutra, who lives next door. “And when I got outside, they were hauling a person away in an ambulance.”
Neighbors told News4Jax that it’s a very quiet area and they were shocked to hear that a homicide happened.
The Police Department said the investigation is ongoing.
“We don’t have much information that we can release without compromising the investigation,” the Police Department said in a Facebook post on Monday night.
