Men arrested in fatal 2020 Arlington shooting that claimed life of Jacksonville father

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday announced the arrests of two men suspected in a shooting that resulted in the deaths of two men.

The shooting was reported Oct. 28, 2020, when at about 8:30 p.m., police responded to Mansion Road. The Sheriff’s Office said police found three people suffering from gunshot wounds. One person died at the scene, and two others were taken to a hospital for treatment.

While at the scene, investigators said, officers were then called to Claudia Spencer Street, also in reference to a person shot. The victim was located in a nearby parking lot and transported to a hospital where he later died. He was identified as Orial Baker.

Through their investigation, the JSO said, it was determined that the incidents were connected. Investigators said the suspects involved in the original incident reported on Mansion Road were identified as Orial Baker, Odale Baker and Latroy Montgomery.

The Sheriff’s Office said it’s believed that Orial Baker and Montgomery entered a residence, and at some point became involved in a physical altercation with people inside. Investigators said Montgomery brandished a firearm “and began firing towards those involved – striking several individuals, including suspect Baker.”

The Sheriff’s Office said Odale Baker and Montgomery face numerous charges, including murder. Montgomery previously served time in prison for robbery and Odale Baker served time in prison for attempted murder, records show.

Kim Anderson said her son, Maurice Anderson, was killed in the shooting. She said she got a phone call from a JSO detective, who told her she was going to receive some long-awaited news.

“I already knew what she was coming to tell me,” Kim Anderson said.

She said her son did not know the suspects, but knew one of the victims, who was one of his friends.

News4JAX has learned Orial Baker was the older brother to Odal Baker and a cousin to Latroy Montgomery.

Kim Anderson said her son’s death was the result of a senseless and unjustified act of gun violence. She, like so many other mothers of gunshot victims, wants the violence to stop, and she wants people who resort to gun violence to pay close attention to her message.

“You will do anything to protect your mother from hurting, but you’re hurting someone else’s mother by senselessly taking their child’s life,” Kim Anderson said. “And if they know the affect it has on a family, they will hopefully rethink just shooting – just because.”
