Man dead, 1 arrested after shooting at motel on Jacksonville’s Northside

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man is dead after a shooting at a motel on Jacksonville’s Northside Thursday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said JSO found a man in his early 40s shot around 9 p.m. on Harts Road at “Home 1 Stay” — the former Gold Rush Inn. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. Police are speaking with witnesses during the ongoing investigation.

The former Gold Rush Inn motel made headlines in 2020 after the state shut it down for ongoing problems with violent crime — citing eight homicides at the location. The closing of the motel displaced several people after years of complaints from neighbors saying the motel was a hotbed for violent crime. The state health inspector also noted violations for things like trash, broken glass on the grounds, holes in the walls, light fixtures hanging by wires, soiled mattresses, mold and roaches.

The former management never made any statements to News4jax. The new motel is under different management.

JSO said one person is in custody.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office or call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.

Motel where a man was shot and killed last night is the site of the former troubled Gold Rush Inn.
