Eligible recipients of the first responder recognition bonus payments are police officers, sheriff’s deputies, paramedics, emergency medical technicians and firefighters employed by local governments throughout the state.

DeSantis started to hand out the bonuses in 2020 as a way to recognize first responders working during the pandemic and to show support to police who were receiving criticism following the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minnesota police officer.
