Cheers to a new resolution? The steps to keep you consistent in 2024

It’s nothing new. Many people look to the New Year as an opportunity to start fresh and set resolutions.

News4JAX is looking at the most popular resolutions with saving money being the top goal for many Americans.

  • 59% of Americans said they want to be more financially healthy going into 2024
  • 50% want to increase their exercise
  • 47% of people want to eat healthier -- specifically eating more home-cooked meals
  • 40% of people wish to spend more time with friends and family over the next 365 days

Narrowing down the list of resolutions can be challenging, but sticking to those resolutions is another uphill battle.

The University of Scranton reports less than 10% of people complete their goals. Researchers identified four reasons why people throw in the towel.

  1. Many resolutions are unnecessary, according to researchers. They suggest setting meaningful goals, so you are more encouraged to stick with them.
  2. Expect obstacles and plan for them. Try to identify stumbling blocks early, so you can avoid them.
  3. Be specific. Some goals are too broad. Instead, set smaller targets that you can work toward throughout the year.
  4. Be accountable. Ask your friends and family to help you stay on track or consider setting notifications for daily reminders
