Jacksonville drivers react to proposed bill limiting left lane driving on highways

FLORIDA – Jacksonville drivers are reacting to the latest proposed bill that would prohibit drivers from driving in the left lane of a highway -- with certain exceptions.

House Bill 317 proposes that drivers would be prohibited from driving in the left-hand lane or a roadway with two or more lanes and a posted speed limit of at least 65 mph.

Exceptions include passing another vehicle, exiting off the street, road or highway, and being directed by law enforcement.

The bill would not apply to emergency, maintenance or construction vehicles. Drivers would still be permitted to use the left lane to avoid obstructions in the road.

Some residents expressed support for the proposed bill.

“It’s a good law because you shouldn’t be camping out in the left lane,” Walter Jones said. “There should be a lane where you pass and go around and then you can assimilate in the flow of things.”

“I support 100%,” Gerold Bright said.

“I wouldn’t think it’s a bad idea,” Mario Delacruz said.

But others like Tkeyia Williams said, “Passing the bill will increase reckless/erratic driving calls due to frequent lane changes to go around slower vehicles.”

“The purpose of using multiple lanes is to ease the congestion of our crowded roadways,” Pamala Avery expressed. “Being unable to use the left lane will definitely not help.”

If passed, drivers could receive a fine of up to $158.

The legislative session begins on Jan. 9.
