Man charged with murder in 2023 shooting at apartment complex on Beach Boulevard

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 54-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder in connection with a shooting on Beach Boulevard in September 2023, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police said around 10 a.m. on Sept. 24, 2023, they received several calls for an emergency at the Sands on Beach Apartments located on Beach Boulevard.

JSO said officers found 25-year-old Johnnie Jackson suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Paramedics took him to the hospital, where he died.

The detectives’ homicide investigation identified Benjamin Groover as the suspect. He was arrested on Wednesday.

It’s unclear if the two men knew each other.

Groover had his first appearance in court Thursday morning. He is being held in the Duval County jail without bond.
