ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The HGTV 2024 Dream Home on Anastasia Island has been a controversial issue in St. Augustine because a seawall was built without the city’s approval, without permits.

Coastal Getaway’s home is part of a contest where people enter for a chance to win the three-bedroom, four bath, $2 million, 3,300 square foot home on Pelican Reef Drive. The winner gets the home fully furnished, a new Mercedes-Benz and $100,000 cash.

The contest ended February 15, but a winner has not been announced due to the unpermitted work done on the house. The house was built with a rocky bulkhead and was too close to a creek and salt marsh.

On Tuesday, the St. Augustine Planning and Zoning Board approved the home since the builder made modifications to the property to address stormwater runoff into the marsh. Board members expressed concern about approving the bulkhead after the fact, and what kind of precedent that might set for future development.

But, the board voted 5-1 to approve it. No word yet on when a winner will be announced.
