News4JAX meteorologist Mark Collins performs ‘location lock’ on tornado near Crescent City

News4JAX radar product provides detailed location lock of tornado over Hammond, Bakerstown area

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. – It’s something you will only see happen on Channel 4.

Meteorologist Mark Collins was able to perform a “location lock” live on air Thursday afternoon after a Tornado Warning was issued for Putnam and Flagler counties. He was able to lock in on a rotation vortex over Highway 17. The lock showed a tornado moving 65 miles per hour in the Bakerstown area.

The exclusive cylinder feature pinpoints the region of the storm with the greatest amount of rotation. The algorithm isolates the inbound and outbound winds marking the vortex of a mesocyclone. This marker is the colocator for a tornado and serves as a clear warning a tornado is likely on the ground.

In the video above, Mark highlights a cylinder with a probable likelihood of it being a tornado.
