Man involved in deputy pursuit in St. Johns County dies in crash

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A 36-year-old Palm Coast man who was involved in a deputy pursuit Thursday in St. Johns County died after a crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The man was driving an SUV north on U.S. 1/Dixie Highway, approaching Shores Boulevard to escape a St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office deputy just before 5:30 p.m., according to FHP.

Spike strips were placed at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Shores Drive to stop the driver, FHP said, but he continued and slammed into the rear of a 56-year-old man’s pickup truck.

The collision caused the SUV to overturn multiple times and the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown out. He died at the scene.

The 56-year-old St. Augustine man driving the truck suffered minor injuries, according to the report. He was wearing a seat belt.
