Man drowns while night fishing near Heckscher Drive boat ramp: JSO

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man died late Thursday night while fishing near a boat ramp off Heckscher Drive on the city’s Northside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police said they were called around 10:30 p.m. Thursday to the Alimacani Boat Ramp on Heckscher Drive because of reports that someone in distress had been pulled from the water.

The man died at the scene.

Investigators said the man and a witness were in the area night fishing when the man became unresponsive in the water. Police do not suspect foul play, but it’s unclear how the man got into the water and how far out he was when this happened.

The man’s identity has not been released.
