Veterans urged to be vigilant against scams targeting benefits

Veterans who rely on pension and disability benefits are urged to be on alert for scams targeting their hard-earned support.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, scammers are contacting veterans through phone calls, emails, and messages, pretending to offer assistance with Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits applications.

However, their real goal is to take money from unsuspecting veterans.

These scammers claim they can expedite the claims process or guarantee a 100% disability rating for a fee. It’s important to note that the VA is the only organization that can determine eligibility and award benefits, and its services are always free.

Some scammers even pressure veterans into signing over a portion of their benefits as payment.

The FTC advises veterans to take these precautions:

• Apply directly through the VA – They provide free assistance in gathering and developing evidence for claims.
• Only work with VA-accredited representatives – Use the VA Accreditation Search tool to verify their credentials.
• Take your time – Scammers push for quick decisions. Read all paperwork carefully before signing anything.

If you suspect a scam, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and notify your state attorney general.
