Vilano Beach closed as Hurricane Imelda impacts Florida Coast Rough surf due to Hurricane Imelda (WJXT)
VILANO BEACH, Fla. – As Hurricane Imelda makes its way away from the coast of Florida, beaches felt the impact of the Category 1 storm that has caused strong winds, waves and swells.
News4JAX took a trip to Vilano Beach, which was closed on Tuesday, to monitor the conditions.
It was a breezy day with winds that felt like at least 25 mph around 4 p.m.
There were no immediate signs of coastal erosion, but emergency officials said they were keeping watch.
People were encouraged to stay off the beach and out of the water as a safety precaution.
A little further south in St. Johns County, in Summer Haven, the rough surf from the hurricane swallowed the shoreline.
