Parking in St. Augustine has always been a challenge, especially during peak tourist season, but a new parking garage could help alleviate that.

City commissioners met on Monday evening and approved the lease for a second public parking garage to be built downtown.

The garage will be built on 194 West King Street and will include 650 parking spaces, plus landscaping, lighting, pedestrian walkways, drop-off and pickup areas, and stormwater management systems.

The city will lease the garage under a 100-year agreement with West Augustine Gateway LLC.

Officials said the project will ease congestion and improve access to the historic district.

Construction is expected to begin in September, with city approvals, pricing, and building permits expected to be finalized by July.

The garage is expected to take two years to complete.

City leaders said this is phase one of a larger development. Phase two could bring retail and mixed-use space to the area.
