JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The accused driver in the murder of 13-year-old Prince Holland will face a new trial in March, months after a mistrial was declared in his case.
Marcel Johnson appeared in court on Thursday in connection with the case involving the death of 13-year-old Prince Holland.
Kentrevious Garard, who was the accused shooter, was found not guilty on all counts in connection with Holland’s murder. Johnson, accused of driving the vehicle that night, saw his first trial end without a verdict.
Johnson’s new trial date was set for March 2.
For more than two years, Holland’s family has told News4JAX they continue to live with grief and with unanswered questions, as the case surrounding his death slowly moves through the courts.
Investigators said Holland was leaving football tryouts in December 2022 when gunfire erupted — killing him and hurting others.
Two men were charged: Garard and Johnson.
Garard was found not guilty, and Johnson’s case ended in a mistrial after jurors could not reach a unanimous verdict.
Holland’s mother shared with News4JAX that the outcome so far is devastating.
She said when she thinks about him, she doesn’t just see a victim — she sees her son, a teenager with plans, routines, and a future that was taken far too soon.
“That was my baby, who should still be here, who should still have a life, who should be in high school right now, who should be playing sports, who should still be cutting his grass and everything else that he was doing. He should still be going to church like he was doing. He had a life to live,” Chantel Brown, Prince Holland’s mom, said.
Johnson’s next court date was set for Feb. 12.
