Through conversations with neighbors who preferred to remain anonymous, News4JAX was told that a woman walking her dog made the initial discovery. When officers arrived they discovered a second person dead.
In the initial briefing, JSO said both victims were identified as men in their early 20s, found in the rear of the home.
JSO Homicide Sergeant La’Tosha Thompson told reporters on Thursday that there was evidence of a firearm being used at the scene, though the official classification of the deaths remains pending.
“There is no suspect information at this time,” Thompson said. Despite the circumstances, JSO said there is no active threat to the community.
As news of the deaths spread across social media Thursday night, community members began sharing possible victim identities and offering prayers. News4JAX reached out to several of these individuals but received no responses.
During a Friday morning visit to the neighborhood, remnants of police tape marked where the investigation took place were discovered. Investigators JSO were seen continuing their work, going door-to-door seeking information about the incident.
Several neighbors said they were forced to park at the end of their street when returning home late Thursday night but said they neither saw nor heard anything suspicious.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is working with the Medical Examiner’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office as the investigation continues. The official incident report has not yet been released.
