‘Happiest baby’: Family identifies 2-year-old boy killed during dispute at Westside apartment complex

Police searching for 1 adult who ran from the scene; 2 other children under 10 years old in home were not hurt

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The family of a young boy who was shot and killed Sunday during a dispute at a Westside apartment complex said he was the “happiest baby” and his death has left them in shock and in “deep sadness.”

The family spoke to News4JAX on Monday and shared photos and videos of A’mahri Robinson.

The family was not ready to speak to News4JAX on camera, but an online fundraiser created by Robinson’s aunt said he was “lovable, and always bringing joy to everyone around him.”

JSO investigators said just before midnight, officers responded to the Valencia Way Apartments, formerly Eureka Gardens, on Labelle Street.

They said they found the 2-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound, and he died at the hospital.

According to police, the incident began as a domestic dispute between adults in the home, and during the argument, a gun went off. No other details were released.

After the shooting, one of the adults involved ran from the scene and police are still looking for that person. They would not share a description or say if the person was the shooter.

Police said they are working to confirm the identity of the person they’re looking for. Once they do, they will release a photo and information about the person.

Two other children under the age of 10 were in the home at the time of the shooting but were not injured. According to the GoFundMe, Robinson left behind an older sister and an older brother.

Police said everyone who was still at the apartment when police arrived is cooperating with the investigation.

Anyone with information about Sunday’s incident is asked to call JSO at 904-630-0500.

The family will now begin the heartbreaking task of making funeral arrangements to honor Robinson’s memory, and said any money raised will go toward his memorial services.

“We appreciate your love, prayers, and support during this difficult time. Thank you for standing with us,” the fundraiser states. “Thank you for keeping A’mahri and our family in your thoughts during this very sad moment. Your kindness and support mean more than words can say.”
