JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville’s Animal Care and Protective Services is asking for the community’s help after a large-scale rescue operation on the city’s Southside left its cat kennels completely full.

ACPS and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Peach Drive last month after receiving a tip about a large number of cats on the property. ACPS Chief Michael Bricker initially estimated the home could contain between 40 and 80 cats, with some potentially deceased.

The next week, Bricker confirmed 40 cats had been recovered alive and nine others were found dead.

Not the first call to this address

This was not the first time ACPS had been called to the Peach Drive home. Bricker said someone previously contacted the agency saying they had gotten in over their head. At that time, ACPS was able to get most of the animals adopted out and treated.

How you can help

With kennels at capacity, ACPS is urgently calling on Jacksonville residents to adopt or foster.

“If you’ve ever thought about adopting or fostering, there has never been a more critical time,” the shelter said in a statement. “Even making space for one cat can change everything for an animal in need.”

The shelter currently has cats and kittens of all ages, temperaments and personalities — from playful kittens to relaxed lap cats. ACPS encourages anyone interested to visit in person.

Animal Care and Protective Services is located at 2020 Forest Street and is open every day from noon to 7 p.m.
