Jacksonville man shot in chest during altercation on Westmont St., suspect flees scene

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says this is a domestic incident and there’s no threat to the community.

Jacksonville, Fla. - Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office investigators are searching for a suspect after a man was shot in the chest during a physical altercation in the 2000 block of Westmont St. on Friday afternoon.

Officers responded to the scene at approximately 4:40 p.m. and located an adult male in his 40s suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was transported to an area hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.

According to Sgt. Mitlyng of the JSO Robbery and Violent Crimes Unit, the suspect and victim are known to each other. The preliminary investigation revealed the suspect pulled a gun on the victim, triggering a physical altercation. The victim was shot during the fight, after which the suspect fled the scene.

“The suspect and victim are known to one another,” Mitlyng said.

Investigators said the incident does not appear to be domestic related, and no shell casings were recovered at the scene.

Detectives believe the shooting to be an isolated incident and say there is no further danger to the community.

Officers and detectives conducted a thorough canvass of the surrounding area and confirmed no nearby residences or businesses were struck by gunfire.

Crime Scene Detectives are actively processing the scene for evidence. The crime scene remained active following the initial press briefing. Detectives with the Robbery and Violent Crimes Unit are interviewing several witnesses, canvassing for surveillance video and following up on investigative leads. Mitlyng confirmed the victim is cooperating with investigators.
