CALLAHAN, Fla. – A man is facing attempted second-degree murder charges after Nassau County deputies said he pistol-whipped a woman, fired multiple shots at her as she fled and barricaded himself inside a Callahan home over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The woman called 911 just after 10:30 p.m. on July 4 and said that she was with Caleb Lopez at a relative’s home in Jacksonville, according to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the woman, Lopez got into an argument with his relative and was told to leave. The two then drove to a home on Jonas Drive in Callahan.

Once at the residence, the victim said Lopez became irate and struck her multiple times with a pistol. She told deputies Lopez then got out of the vehicle, giving her the chance to get behind the wheel and flee the driveway. As she was leaving, Lopez reportedly fired several rounds at the vehicle, striking it at least once.

Lopez then barricaded himself inside the Jonas Drive home, leading to an hours-long standoff with deputies.

After several hours of attempted negotiations, Lopez was taken into custody just after 6 a.m. Sunday, with assistance from a K-9. He was then transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained during the apprehension.

Lopez is charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and shooting into or throwing deadly missiles.
