Gillum, a Democrat, narrowly lost Florida’s 2018 gubernatorial race to Republican Ron DeSantis. He previously served as mayor of Tallahassee.

The Alabama arrest is not the first time Gillum has faced legal issues. In 2020, police found him in what they described as “inebriated” at a Miami Beach hotel, leading to his arrest.

Three years later, in 2023, Gillum was at the center of a federal corruption case involving the alleged illegal use of campaign funds. He was acquitted of charges that he lied to the FBI.
