JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Family, friends and members of the music industry gathered Saturday to celebrate the life of Jacksonville music executive and mentor Billy ‘Bigga Rankin’ Plummer during a homegoing service that drew about a thousand attendees from across Florida and beyond.
The church was filled with local artists, DJs, record executives and supporters who came to pay their respects to a man many credited with helping launch and shape careers in hip-hop.

Among those in attendance were rapper YFN Lucci, representatives from TIG Records and dozens of local artists and DJs. Many traveled from outside Florida to honor Rankin’s legacy and the impact he had on the music industry.
Throughout the service, family members and close friends shared personal stories about Rankin, remembering him not only for his influence in music but also for the guidance he offered those around him.
Speaker after speaker described Rankin as a mentor who was always willing to share advice, encourage others and open doors for emerging artists.
“He always had wisdom to give,” was a common theme throughout the celebration as loved ones reflected on the lessons and life experiences he shared.
The service also included a special recognition from the City of Jacksonville.
Mayor Donna Deegan proclaimed Aug. 2, Rankin’s birthday, as Bigga Rankin Day, recognizing his contributions to the music industry and the lasting impact he made on Jacksonville and beyond.
Bigga Rankin built a reputation over decades as one of the South’s most respected music promoters and DJs, helping connect independent artists with opportunities and earning recognition throughout the hip-hop community.
Those who attended Saturday’s celebration said while they are mourning his loss, they are committed to carrying forward the lessons, mentorship and passion that defined his life and career.
Plummer was known not only for his work in the music business, but also for community events in Jacksonville, including back-to-school efforts through the K.I.N.G. Foundation. The family has said his annual Back-to-School Community Day will still take place Aug. 8 at A. Philip Randolph Park.
