CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – Friends and family are rallying around a former Middleburg High School football player after what loved ones describe as a serious electric scooter accident.

A GoFundMe fundraiser set up for Kadin Hanifen says he was “seriously injured in an electric scooter accident” after losing control of the scooter while spending time with friends. The fundraiser says the crash led to “serious injuries” and “unexpected medical expenses” as his recovery begins.

As of Thursday, the GoFundMe had raised more than $14,000.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it responded to an e-scooter incident last week on South Deer Ave.

“Last Friday, 8/14, we did respond to that location to assist public safety with an e-scooter incident,” CCSO said in a statement. “This was not considered a traffic crash.”

News4JAX has requested the report.

Supporters are also planning an in-person event for Hanifen. Friends say they will host a “Gather and Pray” event at 7 p.m. Thursday in the front visitor’s parking lot at Orange Park Hospital.

Clay County District Schools provided a statement about Hanifen, who the district said graduated from Middleburg High School:

“Our thoughts and support are with Kadin, his family, and his loved ones as they navigate this difficult time. We understand the impact this news has on our school community, and counselors are available to support our students and staff.”

The GoFundMe organizer said, “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who gives, shares, prays, or simply takes a moment to think of Kadin and family.”
