No bath salts found in face eating suspect's body

Toxicology tests show marijuana evidence in Eugene's system

MIAMI – Toxicology test results have come back on a South Florida man fatally shot by a police officer after investigators say he chewed off another man's face, and the medical examiner says no evidence of bath salts was found, WPLG-TV in Miami reports.

The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner Department released the results Wednesday after the May 26 death of Rudy Eugene, 31.

Police said Eugene, 31, ripped off part of the face of Ronald Poppo, 65, a homeless man, during a fight on the MacArthur Causeway. A police officer arrived and fatally shot Eugene, police said.

Eugene was naked when he beat and ripped the clothes off Poppo during the attack, police said.

It was widely speculated that Eugene may have been on bath salts, a type of drug.

The Medical Examiner Department said Wednesday that its toxicology laboratory identified the active components of marijuana in Eugene's system. However, despite testing for other drugs, such as cocaine, LSD, Ecstasy, methamphetamine, PCP, heroin, oxycodone, Xanax and synthetic marijuana, investigators did not find evidence of any other drugs in Eugene's system, officials said.

Officials said they have ruled out the most common drugs found in bath salts.
