Gov. Ron DeSantis joined Idaho Senate President Pro Tempore Kelly Anthon and House Majority Leader Jason Monks on Thursday in Boise to renew their push for a balanced budget amendment.
Last March, DeSantis visited Idaho as part of his campaign to reach 33 state convention calls. He believes the threat of a convention will force Congress to propose a balanced budget amendment for the states to ratify.

At Thursday’s news conference, DeSantis acknowledged that the build up to $38 trillion in debt was a bipartisan failure.
“You had both Republicans and Democrats that have controlled Congress over that period of time and yet the results continue to be similar, and I’m convinced that you’re not going to see this turn around unless you have some constitutional constraints on the ability of Congress to drive us deeper into debt and effectively to end up bankrupting the country,” DeSantis said.
He said that 28 states around the country have certified the call for a convention, and as they get closer to the golden number of 33, DeSantis believes Congress will be forced to act.
“Once you start to get that momentum, Congress sees the writing on the wall and then they will usually right an amendment and then propose that for ratification,” DeSantis explained. “If Congress wants to do it, I am so happy for them to do it.”
DeSantis and Idaho’s leaders said they believe this is the only real way to right the ship of America’s debt.
