Greg Jones retires a Jaguar

Jones played 115 games in 9 seasons with the Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jaguars today signed veteran fullback Greg Jones to a one-day contract so that he could retire as a Jaguar.

Jones was a second-round draft pick of the Jaguars in 2004 and played in 115 games with 67 starts in nine seasons forthe club. He spent the 2013 season with the Houston Texans and the 2014 preseason with the New Orleans Saints and concluded his career with 72 starts in 131 career games.

Jones finished his career with 913 yards on 272 rushes with 10 touchdowns along with 73 receptions for 471 yards and three touchdowns. He ranks ninth in franchise history in career rushing yards, eighth in rushing touchdowns and tied for 13th in games played. He blocked for two running backs (Fred Taylor, Maurice Jones-Drew) that made four Pro Bowlappearances and played a major role in 2011 to help Jones-Drew rush for a single-season franchise record and NFL-best 1,606 yards.

A native of Beaufort, South Carolina, Jones was the lead fullback for two of the top three highest single-season rushing totals in team history including nine of the top 14 games. He rushed for a career-high 575 yards on 151 carries in 2005 including a single-game high of 106 rushing yards on Nov. 13, 2005 against Baltimore. He missed the entire 2006 season with a torn ACL suffered against Tampa Bay in the preseason. He returned to action in 2007 and paved the way for a rushing attack that ranked second in the NFL and he was named first alternate for the Pro Bowl.
