The high school football season is at the halfway point for many teams.
Friday’s Week 5 marked the midway point of the regular seasons, with some excellent games highlighting the way. Second-ranked St. Augustine won a 28-24 thriller over No. 5 Nease to deny the Panthers back-to-back wins in the series.

Trendell Anderson scored the go-ahead touchdown with two minutes to play, and the St. Augustine defense held firm at the finish to top the Panthers (4-1). Somourian Wingo hauled in two touchdown passes from Brenton James, including a Hail Mary at halftime for a 14-10 lead.
Brayden Felder caught touchdown passes from Aiden Phifer and on a trick play from Tyshawn Ford to lead Nease. Phifer also had a rushing touchdown that put Nease in front 24-21 with 5:55 to play before James moved St. Augustine down the field. He left the game injured on the final plays before Anderson scored the eventual game winner.
Columbia topped visiting Trinity Christian 27-20 to give head coach Brian Allen his 100th career win. The Tigers (5-0) stayed perfect heading into a Week 6 showdown at St. Augustine.
No. 6 Mandarin couldn’t do anything to slow down powerhouse IMG Academy in a 57-7 blowout. The Ascenders are now 5-1 all-time against local teams. The 50-point margin of victory eclipsed the 42-point win over the Mustangs last year for the most decisive in those six games.
Yulee remains Nassau County’s last unbeaten
Yulee used a powerful defense to shut down rival West Nassau 17-0 on Friday night. The Warriors entered the game 5-0 and beat the Hornets last year. Santa Fe topped Fernandina Beach 37-27 to end the Pirates’ perfect start. Fernandina, West Nassau and Yulee opened the night as unbeatens in Nassau County. Now, it’s just the Hornets (5-0) who stay perfect.
Winless no more
Bartram Trail, Riverside and Suwannee got out of the winless column in Week 5.
The Bears romped to a 42-0 win over Orange Park, ending the second-worst start in program history. Bartram is now 1-4. Riverside trailed for much of the game but came back at the finish to top Ribault 21-20. The Generals are now 1-4.
Suwannee had no trouble with Hamilton County in a 34-6 rout.
Milestone game for Beachside QB
Beachside won a wild back-and-forth 35-31 high school football game against visiting Bishop Kenny on Thursday night.
Barracudas quarterback Eddie Jordan accounted for a school record 535 passing yards and five touchdowns in the game. Four of his receivers had career nights as well. Maddox Hunstad had three touchdown catches and finished with six receptions (104 yards).
Drew Watson added a game-best 168 receiving yards and a touchdown on seven catches. Brennan Monaco (144 yards, TD) and Drew Aldrich (10 catches, 113 yards) also had major games for the Barracudas.
The perfect teams
Through five weeks in Florida and six weeks in Georgia, the area has a combined 10 unbeaten teams.
Columbia, Middleburg, Raines, St. Augustine, St. Joseph, White and Yulee are perfect among the teams in the News4JAX Florida coverage region. In Georgia, Camden County, Pierce County and Ware County are all a perfect 5-0.

Cedar Creek Christian, Cornerstone Classical, Clay, Duval Charter, Englewood, Harvest Community, Keystone Heights, KIPP Bold City, Parker, Sandalwood and Westside
