JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It was a big Week 6 in high school football on Friday night.
St. Augustine reigned supreme in another Super 10 showdown, while Bolles running back Xander Edwards rushed into the record books with an unbelievable performance.
Edwards rushed for a whopping eight scores in a 73-49 win over Baldwin. Edwards’ total rushing numbers from the game were ridiculous — 39 carries for 522 yards. He scored on runs of 44, 22, 32, 42, 77, 59, 35 and 1 yards.
It continued a stellar stretch for local runners. Hilliard’s DJ Alderman rushed for 477 yards and seven touchdowns in a 49-48 loss to St. Joseph last week. No Florida running back is currently listed in the National Federation of High Schools record books with that many rushing touchdowns in a game, although there have been high numbers. South Lake’s Kelley Joiner Jr. is the last known state runner to hit that single-game number. Joiner had 373 rushing yards in a 54-35 win over Lake Minneola on Aug. 31, 2019.
Edwards, whose father, Mar, was an excellent fullback at Notre Dame and a second-round pick of the 49ers, has been on the warpath this year. He eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark in the game, and Bolles needed it in a surprising shootout in its district opener. Bolles was playing without top lineman JJ Sparks (Miami commit) and leaned on the remaining linemen and tight ends to pave the way for Edwards.
Yulee phenom Derrick Henry and Baker’s Kayleb Wagner are two of the more well-known running backs to turn in career games like Edwards. Henry had four six-touchdown rushing games during his electric senior season in 2012. Henry rushed for a then-record 502 yards in a game against Jackson that year. Wagner, who was born without his left hand and part of his forearm, broke Henry’s single-game rushing record with 535 rushing yards and six TDs during a game in 2022.
No. 2-ranked St. Augustine used another huge game from Somourian Wingo to beat fourth-ranked Columbia 41-21 in a huge district game. The Yellow Jackets (6-0) have now beaten Super 10 teams Bolles, Nease and the Tigers.
Wingo had two receiving touchdowns from Brenton James and a rushing touchdown out of the wildcat for St. Augustine. He also had an interception to ice the win. Durell “Nate” Preston added two rushing touchdowns for St. Augustine. For Columbia, Jerome Horne had a couple short yardage touchdown runs, and Kyren Caldwell had a receiving score.
