Varsity 4 News4JAX Super 10 rankings
Rank, (previous), school, record last year, classification
1. (2) St. Augustine (6-0, Class 4A)
Coaches poll current ranking (previous ranking): 1/2
Last week: Beat (4) Columbia, 41-21. This week: Off.
Why they’re here: No teams locally has played the quality of competition (and won) that the Yellow Jackets have. They’ve got Super 10 teams Bolles, Columbia and Nease. St. Augustine’s stay at No. 1 after Week 3 was brief. We’ll see if they Yellow Jackets can hang in the top spot a bit longer this time.
2. (1) Raines (4-0, Class 3A)
Coaches poll current ranking (previous ranking): 2/1
Last week: Beat Riverside, 49-0. This week: at Ribault (1-5), Oct. 4, 2 p.m.
Why they’re here: Vikings are squashing teams but strength of schedule (wins over teams who are a combined 5-17) is the reason they get jumped this week by St. Augustine. They’ve outscored opponents 225-17 this season and are still a good pick to play for the 3A championship.
3. (3) Bolles (5-1, Class 2A)
Coaches poll current ranking (previous ranking): 3/3
Last week: Beat Baldwin, 73-49. This week: Off.
Why they’re here: Xander Edwards’ career game (522 rushing yards, 8 TDs) is a record for Northeast Florida and the second highest total in state history. Bulldogs need to figure out what the issue on defense is.
4. (5) Mandarin (5-1, Class 6A)
Coaches poll current ranking (previous ranking): 4/5
Last week: Beat First Coast, 34-13. This week: at Rockledge (2-3).
Why they’re here: Mustangs bounced back from a drubbing by IMG Academy and got out to a good start in district play. They’ve got a difficult closing stretch after this with games against Fletcher, Oakleaf and St. Augustine.
5. (7) Oakleaf (5-1, Class 6A)
Coaches poll current ranking (previous ranking): 6/7
Last week: Beat Fletcher, 38-9. This week: Off.
Why they’re here: Quality win for the Knights as they shredded Fletcher for a big district win. They’ve got another district game against First Coast after the bye week.
6. (5) Nease (4-2, Class 6A)
Coaches poll current ranking (previous ranking): 7/4
Last week: Lost to Gainesville Buchholz, 27-7. This week: Off.
Why they’re here: The Panthers have dropped back-to-back games, but the loss to Buchholz was tough after such a strong start offensively. They’re going to have to reach the playoffs as an at-large team now.
7. (8) Bradford (5-1, Class 2A)
Coaches poll current ranking (previous ranking): 5/8
Last week: Beat Keystone Heights, 53-0. This week: at Palatka (1-4).
Why they’re here: The Tornadoes started their district slate last week and rolled. They should do the same this week as the march to a 9-1 regular season thunders on.
8. (4) Columbia (5-1, Class 4A)
Coaches poll current ranking (previous ranking): 8/6
Last week: Lost to (2) St. Augustine, 41-21. This week: vs. Manatee (2-3), 7:30 p.m.
Why they’re here: The Tigers dropped from the ranks of the unbeaten last week and fell out of contention for the district title. They’re still in a good spot to reach the postseason.
9. (10) Beachside (4-1, Class 5A)
Coaches poll current ranking (previous ranking): 10/9
Last week: Off. This week: vs. Tocoi Creek (3-2).
Why they’re here: The Barracudas really have a shot to win a district championship this year. The Surf N’ Turf rivalry this week is always a good test.
10. (9) White (4-1, Class 4A)
Coaches poll current ranking (previous ranking): 8/10
Last week: Lost to Merritt Island, 52-49. This week: at Atlantic Coast (3-2), 6:30 p.m.
Why they’re here: The Commanders lost a heartbreaker on a walk-off field goal last week. I kept them in this week over University Christian. White’s strength of schedule is terribly low, but they should still win a district title easily.
