Varsity 4 Super 6 baseball: Fernandina Beach moves into rankings as top 5 teams stay put

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Varsity 4 Super 6 high school baseball rankings will be published on Fridays during the regular season with the exception of a week off for spring break. Records are through Feb. 26.

Rank, Previous, School, Record, Classification

1. (1) Trinity Christian (5-1, Class 2A)

Quality wins: Beachside, Lowndes (Ga.), Richmond Hill (Ga.), Suwannee, Tocoi Creek.

Notable: The Conquerors have stayed hot, rolling through Lowndes (11-3), Richmond Hill (5-0) and Tocoi Creek (5-1) since our last Super 6. They’ve got North Marion on deck Friday night. We get a No. 1-2 showdown next Thursday and Friday with games against St. Johns Country Day.

2. (2) St. Johns Country Day (5-0, Class 1A)

Quality wins: Beachside, Providence, Suwannee, University Christian.

Notable: The Spartans crushed Savannah Islands (Ga.) 12-0 in their lone game since our last Super 6. Tallahassee Lincoln on Friday is up next. Then, it’s Oakleaf (Monday) before a two-game series against No. 1 Trinity Christian on Thursday and Friday. Jonas Wells (.429) and Preston Cole (.400, HR) lead the St. Johns regulars at the plate.

3. (3) Bishop Snyder (5-0, Class 2A)

Quality wins: Baldwin, Central (Ala.), Fernandina Beach, Suwannee.

Notable: The Cardinals are rolling, and a case can certainly be made to have Snyder, St. Johns and Trinity as the tri-No. 1 teams. Tough games against Georgia teams Newnan and Morgan County on Friday and Saturday. Ilias Mamea (.462) and Tanner Upton (.438) are leading the Cardinals at the plate.

4. (4) Creekside (6-1, Class 7A)

Quality wins: Beachside, Bolles, Clay, North Marion, St. Joseph, Trinity Christian.

Notable: The Knights had a good week, stacking wins over Bolles (6-2), North Marion (4-2) and St. Joseph (10-3). They get a solid Providence team on Friday night. Dominic Cantona (.474, 8 RBI) and Aramis Guanchez (.381) lead Creekside at the plate. Gavin Duprey has whiffed 33 in 15 IP in a 2-0 start on the mound.

5. (5) Bartram Trail (6-1, Class 6A)

Quality wins: Bishop Kenny, Clay, First Coast, Ponte Vedra, Spruce Creek

Notable: The Bears went 3-0 since our last Super 6, including a big-time win over Spruce Creek (4-1). That was the first loss of the season for the Hawks. Colby Dean (.400, HR) and Colton McClenaghan (.360, HR, 8 RBI) lead the Bears at the plate. Brody Barnes, Croix Dibacco and Kors Matthews have combined to whiff 51 in 36.1 IP.

6. (NR) Fernandina Beach (7-1, Class 3A)

Quality wins: Baldwin, Bishop Kenny, Sandalwood.

Notable: Great start for the Pirates, whose only loss is a competitive 2-0 game to Bishop Snyder. They’ve won six straight since then, including quality Ws over Bishop Kenny and Sandalwood. Trace Farmer (.462, HR, 7 RIB) and Conner Bayless (.368, HR, 14 RBI) lead the offense, while Grady Stevens (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 21 Ks, 13 IP) has been tops on the mound. They nudge out Tocoi Creek this week.
