Jaguars defense on historical pace

Jacksonville leads NFL in 7 defensive categories

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Early during the offseason program newly signed free agent Calais Campbell said that the Jaguars defense had a chance to be special. Several of his teammates backed up that claim and felt that Jacksonville could have the best defense in the NFL.

Turns out they were right. The Jaguars have the No. 1 defense in the NFL and the numbers they’re putting up are staggering.

Through 10 games the Jaguars lead the league in the following defensive categories:

Scoring defense: 14.1 points per game

Total yardage: 275.6 yards per game

Passing defense: 162 yards per game

Sacks: 40

Takeaways: 23

Fumble recoveries: 9

Defensive touchdowns: 5

The Jaguars are the first team since the 1985 Chicago Bears to allow fewer than 150 points and less than 2,800 yards through the first 10 games of the season.

“I think it’s a credit to our players and how they come in each and every day and work hard,” said Jaguars defensive coordinator Todd Wash. “They understand the game plan. They go out with focus and run it in practice and then they execute it in the games. So it’s really a credit to our players and how well they’ve been playing.”

If the Jaguars continue this type of production they would become the first team in the Super Bowl era (1966) to lead the NFL in scoring defense, total defense, takeaways and sacks.
