JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On Sunday in EverBank Field, we celebrated the best of times during the worst of times.
The Jaguars fell to 2-11 in a tough loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Yes, we were better but not good enough. Blake Bortles was turnover free and the Jaguars’ defense was impressive on two critical goal line stands.
The offense continues to struggle to score points and our defense continues to shut down opposing offenses. I think we can all agree that this is simply the worst of times. What makes this so difficult is the fact that expectations were so high coming into the 2016 season. This year was supposed to be the tipping point, the year that Jaguar fortunes would turn in a positive direction. Inexplicably, this didn't happen. Nobody could've predicted this outcome, and here we are in the worst stretch in Jaguars history.
But Sunday wasn't an entire loss. In fact, the day will go down as one of the best moments in Jag history.
On Sunday we inducted one of our greats into the Pride of the Jaguars. Jimmy Smith was honored at halftime as the fourth Jaguar player to get in the Pride. He was one of best, maybe the best to ever wear the teal and black. His numbers speak for themselves. His incredible catches and his great games are forever etched in our memories.
Personally, it was a special day for me as well. It was such a joy and a privilege to be his teammate. In fact, if Tom Coughlin never brought our No. 82 to town, I’m pretty certain my career would've been entirely different. Jimmy made me better. Jimmy made everyone better. He was not only incredible as a player, he was incredible as a teammate. His leadership, his work ethic, and his vibrant personality were infectious. I simply can’t thank Jimmy enough, and I'm thrilled for him and his family on this special day.

While it was a tough day for our team, it was a great day for our former Jaguars and the many fans who continue to support our great organization.
Former NFL QB Mark Brunell answers viewer's questions about the game
Considering the quality play on defense and the offense’s inability to score, do you think there is infighting between the offense and defense in the locker room?
- David in Murray Hill
I don't. While we have a tough time winning games, I truly believe this team has a lot of character. I'm sure it's frustrating, but Gus has created a culture where players support each other regardless of the outcomes. This team has stayed together and will continue to do so.
Do you think Bortles lacks the “killer instinct” needed to win games late?
- Jason in Orange Park
I wouldn't say Blake lacks killer instinct. Blake is young, and winning games late in the fourth quarter are tough for young players. It's tough for veterans as well. Please understand that it takes more than just a QB to win in this league. Yes, he needs to play better, but having a good supporting cast is as important as anything else. I just don't think we have all the pieces in place for a young QB to succeed.
Why do you think the Jags didn’t call a timeout at the end of the first quarter with three timeouts and 41 seconds left?
- Steve in Jacksonville Beach
Not sure.
